Simon Ambrose AKA THATDJ was this year's DJ Awards Bedroom DJ Winner. DJsounds chewed the fat with the golden spinner on the roof of Cafe Mambo in our not so secret Pioneer "Lab" where as part of his prize, alongside a flightcased set up of DJM-350 and two CDJ-350s he received a personal one-to-one on the one's and two's with Toolroom head honcho Mark Knight.

Mark revealed his personal secrets to build your profile, play a fantastic set as well as more practical tips such as using rekordbox in conjunction with the CDJ-2000s and enhancing your performance with the DJM-900 nexus. Simon was then rushed downstairs to come on after the Swedish House Mafia played their closing party Mambo set.

This years runners up are Robson Nogueira, Lavatekk and Adrian Myynt.

Space residents Steve Lawler, Carl Cox and Mark Knight talk to DJsounds fresh from killing it on the decks at Space Opening 2011.

Steve reveals how many opening and closings he has done and how he uses the CDJ-2000s and DJM-2000 to control Traktor. Mark Knight enthuses about his new Toolroom Knights residency this summer on Mondays and how the DJM-900 nexus has evolved from the DJM-800. Space can have a very moving effect on even the most seasoned clubber explains Carl who also cites the importance of the IMS as a factor in the success of the now, gigantic opening weekend.

The Space Opening spectacle again took place over two nights, Saturday and Sunday and stayed open to a leg-wobbling midday on Sunday! Always trying to better themselves the incredible talent playing across the two parties and eye popping visuals and performances plus compulsory CO2 cannons made sure the Ibiza season kicked off with a bang.

Here Mark tells us the story of Toolroom, its off-shoots, developing the brand in clubland and raising his game with edits and even visuals. Other topics on the radar include how Mark organises his DJ sets and the benefits of digital downloads, while the explosive ‘Man With the Red Face’ footage is from last year’s Beatport pool party. This year’s WMC saw Toolroom take over Space and release the Miami09 compilation, which features their 100th release – Faithless’ ‘Music Matters’. Check out this club-friendly video content (DVJ VP1), which is the brainchild of Ne1co frontman Oli Sorenson. This DVJ mix is created from an exciting new series of AV singles that are presented by the London-based audio-visual collective Ne1co and produced exclusively for DJdownload.com. Oli tells us the aim of his project was to enable video performers, who are not necessarily producers, to download complete DVJ tracks from DJdownload.com, that's the audio and video on a single digital file, and be able to gather enough of these to be able to play a full DVD DJ set. Says Oli: ‘The videos produced are full frame PAL, but since they are digital files, no region restrictions apply. Therefore video spinners from any part of the world can download these and burn onto any region DVDs without any conversions, that or play straight from a laptop with specialist AV packages like Cue, Serato with SL video or Resolume Avenue.’ To show us exactly how these new video tracks may be used in an AV set, Oli has put together a mixed three-track excerpt as follows. Celebrating another great year for electronic music, the 11th edition of the DJ Awards took place last month at Pacha in Ibiza. The star-studded ceremony was hosted by Des Paul (MTV/Capital radio) and Mariana Ribelo, and featured performances by Ron Carroll and Fragma.

Now of course DJsounds’ Lorna Cole was there to touch base with many of the top artists, and these included: Best Techno DJ winner Richie Hawtin; Luciano, who was nominated in two categories (Breakthrough and Tech House artist), and won Best Ibiza Set with Ricardo Villalobos for their prize turn at Cocoon. Next in the clip comes a quick catch up with the DJ Awards founders themselves – Lenny Ibizarre and Jose Pacual.

Then there’s Jon Sa Trinxa, who was nominated for best Ibiza Resident DJ; DJ Marky, who took the Dance Nation of the Year Brazil award; best Hip Hop winner, Muchomuchacho; and Jazzanova, who won the best Downtempo & Eclectic award. The confused techno DJ Adam Beyer, who took the Minimal kryptonite, follows, together with Funkagenda, who won Best Newcomer, and Best Ibiza Track with Mark Knight for their ubiquitous ‘Man With the Red Face’ cover.

Sarah Main, who picked up a technology award on behalf of Pioneer for best CD Player Innovation (for the CDJ-400 digital decks), also says a few words before our Ibiza team tracks down House winner David Guetta, along with winner of the best Breakthrough award Sander van Doorn, and Johannes Goller of Cocoon, who picked up a special award for Best Ibiza Night. Those representing Beatport (winner of the Outstanding Contribution award), Tiesto (best International DJ) and Armin van Buuren (best Trance DJ) are also interviewed, along with Sasha, winner of best Progressive House DJ. Award-winner David Guetta and his F*** Me I’m Famous party later rounded off the night perfectly at Pacha.
