Craig started DJing at 15 when he was given a loan of a friend's set of Technics 1200s. From there his passion grew and he's been now DJing for over 20 years and still loves it as much as he did in the beginning. Currently he uses three CDJs, a DJM-900 and RMX-1000.

Ross Carrick was the 2011 winner of our BPM 10 minute mix competition. He won a place playing on our stand at the prestigious show.

The mix shows how various effects on the DJM-2000 can be incorporated into the mix. In particular, he uses the 'sample oscillator' from the middle L.E.D. screen along with reverb and the 'zip' colour effect, changing parameters to give a sense of a build-up before the next part of the track. Nice!

We last saw Kutski when he was mashing up Mario Brothers.
We join him again as he gives us his take on old skool hip hop. Watch as he scratches his way through hit after hit, cutting them up live on our now iconic hip hop mixer, the DJM-909. This mixer arguably changed the way that hip hop DJs battle when it came out, count them, seven years ago! This was the first Pioneer mixer with the now classic Roll effect in amongst another 49 effects which included innovative effects such as Tone Generators, Multi-tap Delays and complex filters that are all accessed via a super intuitive touch screen.

We're back with Your DJsounds hot stuff, Kel Sweeney, for a demo on the SVM-1000. If you're a keen viewer, you'll know that Kel, from the South of England, has been DJ-ing for 20 years and boasts gigs under his belt alongside the likes of Judge Jules and Dave Pearce, as well as supporting artists such as Dizzee Rascal and Danni Minogue.

Kel switched to using videos for his sets three years ago and uses the SVM-1000 to enable him to mix the visuals and sound. To quote his website: "Every tune played in his DVJ sets have a custom made video to accompany them, incorporating motion graphics, film clips and remixed music videos".

His residency at The University Of Kent has been going from strength to strength climaxing with providing DVJ support for Florence & The Machine at their Summer Ball on 12 June.

Kel is still at Liquid in Basildon which is the largest nightclub in Essex with a capacity of 3500 and a 360 degree video projection system around the dance floor which is an amazing platform and show case for his DVJ sets on the SVM-1000 and three DVJ turntables that are installed there.

In addition he now has three global internet Radio shows on RedSeaDance Radio (www.redseadanceradio.com ), Global1fm (www.global1fm.com) and Safe Radio (www.saferadio.co.uk).

An Eclectic Method Mashup!

Jonny from Eclectic Method, one of our DVJ favourites, returns to our screens to deliver a hot video mash-up on the SVM-1000 and DVJs, complete with split screen, picture-in-picture functionality for your pleasure. You can really see what's going on with those dextrous fingers of his.

Originating from the UK, Jonny, one-third of Eclectic Method is now based in Brooklyn, NYC. The trio have most recently put out the Wu Tang Clan video mixtape, splicing classic Wu Tang with the Kung Fu movies they sampled. The documentary "Copyright Criminals" was released which features Eclectic Method alongside Chuck D, De La Soul, DJ Qbert as well as many other people from sampling history; the Method also created remix sections for the documentary. The Method are currently putting out their Rock&Remix 2 video mixtape and are in the studio working with Chuck D.

So they did manage to eventually get out of the Playboy Mansion....

Ctrl Alt Shift is a smart new 10-minute documentary film by Dean G Moore and Simon Lane. Filmed at several locations across the UK, and using some interesting participatory/exploratory techniques, it assembles the views of various pioneering VJs and audiovisual artists.

Visionaries captured in this mix include: Addictive TV, Alex Wright of Fata Morgana, Chris Allen from The Light Surgeons, Hexstatic, Michael Faulkner of D-Fuse, Oli Sorenson (formerly VJ Anyone), and Vector Meldrew.

Whether you’re already familiar with these faces or fresh to the field, looking for an introduction to the emerging artform, its evolution and impact, there’s plenty of food for thought here.

Ctrl Alt Shift was conceived, filmed, edited and produced by Dean, who is himself a VJ, and DJ/producer Simon (DJ Search) as a part of their university degrees in broadcasting.

They now plan to transform the documentary into an AV show that will be performed/re-mixed live.

DJ Tutor’s Direction/Reverse Mode Demo

The DJ coach with more drive than a Ferrari, DJ Tutor (aka Ellaskins) unleashed another one of his online video tutorials last week.

This time demonstrating some of the different ways in which you can use the direction/reverse feature on the DVJ decks. The instant reverse toggle switch flips the direction in which the music is playing.

So using the switch together with the deck’s hot cues and looping facilities basically allows you to improvise more with the music, according to your style.

Here DJ Tutor’s using DVJ-1000 DVD decks, but you could also use CDJ-1000s.

Lewis Ryder talks about Space Ibiza, DJing and production tips

Winner of DJsounds’ Space Ibiza DJ residency competition, Lewis Ryder speaks out ahead of his set at the club’s massive opening party this Sunday (31st May).

He also shows off a few techy tips in this clip, filmed at his home studio in South West London.

Lewis kicks off his summer by journeying into the deep space of the discoteca. (You can catch his set at Space this Sunday between 5.30 and 7.30pm, local time.)

He will then start his residency – performing every Thursday from 16th July to 3rd September for Be @ Space. Other DJs playing for Be @ Space this year include Chris Liebing, Elio Riso, Guy Gerber, Tom Novy and Wally Lopez.

DJ/DVJ Dan Tait recorded the first cover-mount DVD mix (Just a DVJ Mix) for iDJ magazine in 2008. Here, in part 2 of his interview, he talks about the technology and effects that featured, as well as some of the techniques that were used during its making. To make his mix Dan used the SVM-1000, which mixes video together using an ‘additive dissolve’ process. (Basically, this means when the cross fader is between two video tracks the resulting image will appear brighter rather than darker.) He also shows how touch effects, available via the SVM’s touch-screen, were an intuitive way to manipulate the mix. You can check out the mix as a podcast on Dan’s site.
