Evolution. Changing times call for changing tools. That’s why Pioneer’s new multi-format player is the natural selection for the next generation of DJs. It’s been 15 years since the genesis of Pioneer’s first CDJ deck, which led to the world-beating CDJ-1000 series. Now it’s time for something completely new. Introducing a major leap forward for the club standard CDJ series: the CDJ-2000 – Pioneer’s new professional player for the digital age.
The CDJ-2000 fizzes with fresh DNA and can play music from multiple sources, including CD, DVD, USB storage devices and SD memory cards. It also comes with the revolutionary music database management software for DJs: rekordbox™. Based on Pioneer’s ‘Prepare & Perform’ concept, rekordbox™ works (for both Mac and PC) like the leading music database management software, but is more creative and more DJ-friendly. rekordbox™ allows DJs to prepare more before their performance and opens a door to tools such as Hot Cue Banks and Quantize, for perfectly synced loops every time. DJs can then export data to a USB or SD device to access vast libraries of music files and perform live – without the need for extra equipment or any inconvenient rewiring in the club. No need to burn CDs, simply take your USB device to the club, plug in to the CDJ and play. Through the industry-first Pro DJ Link, music files and database data on one single USB or SD device can be shared simultaneously by up to four players connected via LAN (local area network) cable. Plus, the data history of each DJ set is automatically saved and can be made into a playlist that can be loaded back into rekordbox™. Another key facet of the CDJ-2000 is its advanced HID (human interface device) and MIDI capabilities for native control of DVS (digital vinyl systems) via USB. What’s more, it achieves Pioneer’s highest sound quality to date through an improved audio output circuit, a new audiophile-pleasing Wolfson DAC processor, and a built-in 24-bit/48 kHz sound card.
Naturally, the CDJ-2000’s layout is related to its robust, reliable predecessor, the CDJ-1000MK3. However, although it fits easily into the MK3’s footprint, it ramps up performance with the largest (6.1-inch) clearest full-colour screen in the business. Below the screen is an industry-first waveform Needle Search™/Needle Drop ribbon, so that all the convenience of direct file browsing can now be found in an intuitive hardware format. Add to these features a highly evolved illuminated Jog wheel, and an overall enhanced design, complete with carry handles and Kensington lock, and you have the ideal digital innovation for total performance and seamless synchronisation.
‘DJing is increasingly about the endless creative possibilities opened up by digital Darwinism. Natural selection favours superior performance and those who can better streamline processes to channel the best of the software and hardware worlds. It really is all about the survival of the fittest. This new hybrid species of multi-player, our CDJ-2000, is thus an adaptable digital solution for the evolving needs of leading DJs,’ comments Mark Grotefeld, Head of Marketing (Pro DJ), Pioneer Europe.
CDJ-2000 KEY FEATURES
Fully compatible with a wide range of media formats
Besides regular audio CDs (and MP3 data CDs and DVDs) the CDJs can play music files that have been copied to SD memory cards and USB storage devices, such as flash memory and hard disk drives. Compatible file formats are MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF (16/24-bit). Files on Tonium’s Pacemaker*1 can also be played when connected as a storage device via USB.
rekordbox™ database management software for DJs introduces the ‘Prepare & Perform’ concept
The idea behind ‘Prepare & Perform’ is that rekordbox™ works in harmony with DJs, allowing them to analyse, arrange, edit and export their music and data to digital media before their performance. Put simply, rekordbox™ offers an alternative to taking a laptop to the club. Not only does it function like a database for DJs (and is compatible with the leading music database management software through a bridge feature) but it also offers many more creative opportunities. DJs can prepare cue points, loops and Hot Cues in advance of their show. They can manage music files by editing tag information and artwork, while rekordbox™ analyses such track information as BPM and wave data. DJs can also edit beatgrids, which utilise the CDJ-2000’s new Quantize performance features, so, as an option, all cue points and loops can be set perfectly on-beat every time. In addition, users can create, edit and manage playlists in rekordbox™ and the CDJ-2000 creates a history playlist on your storage device of every track played for review when you next sync with rekordbox™.
Huge full-colour display screen leads the market
A bright, elevated 6.1-inch LCD enables DJs to acquire all information at a glance in the dark. And it’s not just about browsing directly though text, because artwork can also be displayed. Thanks to a combination of the GUI (graphical user interface) and a rotary selector, track browsing/selection is made super-quick and easy. Plus, for on-the-fly programming, tag lists can be created using the dedicated Tag button. Meanwhile, that all-important wave data is displayed with improved precision, so that high/low amplitude components can be grasped in the greatest detail to date.
Industry-first Needle Search™/Needle Drop for speedy searches and previews
This industry first reproduces digitally the action of needle dropping on vinyl. Needle Search™ lets you instantaneously preview music at any chosen point with pinpoint accuracy. Simply slide a finger along the Needle Drop pad while listening to the stuttered preview and checking the wave display to locate peaks and troughs. This tactile ribbon controller can also be used to conduct keyword searches.
Industry-first Pro DJ Link permits multi-play from a single source and file sharing among four players
For the very first time, DJs can connect up to four CDJ-2000s and rekordbox™ by LAN connection and instantly share music and data between the players. That’s one LAN hub, one USB storage device or SD memory card, and countless creative possibilities – multi-directionally reinforced.
Improved quality audio output circuit with Wolfson DAC processor
A high-performance Wolfson DAC processor allows audio to be reproduced with a lush analogue feel. Great news for audiophiles is the better signal-to-noise ratio, giving a massive improvement on the CDJ-1000MK3 processor, and a new hybrid operation amplifier circuitry that also minimises noise. The result is a clear, transparent sound that is faithful to the original.
Advanced connectivity with 24-bit/48 kHz sound card, HID and MIDI control via USB
The CDJ-2000 has a built-in sound card so no extra interface or unnecessary rewiring is required and connection is possible by using only one USB cable. Information can be output as MIDI to software and other MIDI devices via USB. The player can also be used as a MIDI controller. But HID control offers superior interfacing with software, beating MIDI with speed, audio/visual streaming and two-way information on displays. Consequently, the player can easily, precisely and natively control such DVS systems as Serato’s Scratch Live*2, Native Instrument’s Traktor*3 series and MixVibes’ Cross*4 – without any need for time-coded discs.
Quantized beat loop for perfectly synced cue points, loops and Hot Cues
After music files have been analysed with rekordbox™, the Quantize function automatically corrects and syncs the beat during a manual loop or real-time cue in. This even works if the in/out point is off beat. There is also a convenient auto one-touch four-beat loop onboard, if required. And thanks to a new 0.5 frame step, there’s twice the resolution for setting even more precise cue and loop points.
An extra three Hot Cue Banks, available via the rekordbox™ playlist
Aside from the three Hot Cue buttons on the CDJ-2000 player itself, there are also three Hot Cue Banks to be found in the rekordbox™ playlist. This provides users with an abundance of Hot Cues to further extend the editing opportunities.
Advanced new Jog for smooth operability and greater feeling adjustment
The all-new club conscious Jog dial is illuminated in four different places. It’s also much quieter and smoother in operation, and has a far wider tension range when compared to the CDJ-1000MK3.

Comment by Marc Hannibal, September 17th, 2009 @ 11:11 am
I know this is a Pioneer DJ fan site but I’m a little surprised that the comments are so positive. I think that it looks like a great product but from a value standpoint it offers almost the same functions as the Numark NS7 (which is more than half the price) for the mobile DJ and the Denon S3700 has 75% of the features for 30% of the price plus real vinyl for the professional DJ. Think its great just priced wrong and the CDJ-900 is priced worse for what it does. I guess time will tell. I would love to use them but $4400 is crazy for 2 decks.
Comment by Vincent, September 17th, 2009 @ 11:18 am
Recommended retail price will be € 1799 . This is a small investment for any professional DJ/CLUB especially with all the features the CDJ-2000 has, this will be the new standard for the next 5 years.
It is much money but considering all the improvements and advantages compared to competitors. As a good DJ you earn this back at no time.. in the end all the best DJ’s in the world will have this in their decks like Bob Sinclar, David Guetta, Dj Tiesto, Paul Van Dyck, …

3am in Dallas, Texas!!! The product that you hate to love! I’ll buy when avail. just because, its the future of the industry standard! Don’t hate progress, embrace it!
Stick to the records, if you can’t handle it, we will leave you behind. Theory of “natural selection”!
Comment by Vincent, September 17th, 2009 @ 11:42 am
Marc,
Even if the Numark has the same features, The Pioneer CDJ-2000 is more appealing and it matters how the features are integrated and used. If you are a pro DJ than why would you use other equipment than in any club .. it is just more convenient to have the same material.

RE:Comment by GroovinDJ, September 17th, 2009 @ 11:19 am
No internal hard drive means it fails for me.
If you think about it, no internal drive makes sense. If you play in a club- the environment these are designed for, what is the point of an internal hard drive? NO guest dj will use an internal HD. A resident will probably prefer to remove his ‘crate’ and modify at home. Even if you have these at home an internal HD makes little sense because you can’t remove and transport to a gig. Pioneer got it right.
Comment by Roman, September 17th, 2009 @ 12:00 pm
WTF?! No NTFS support for harddrives on USB port makes this feature pretty useless to me. The HID/MIDI support is THE one feature which will keep this player in the game.
Comment by Scott, September 17th, 2009 @ 12:10 pm
Whats the song playing in the background??
Comment by Joe Ramirez, September 17th, 2009 @ 12:15 pm
Advanced Connectivity
The new turntable feature a 24-bit/48 kHz sound card and HID and MIDI
control compatibility via USB port. Up to 35 controls on the surface of the
player can be used to trigger other devices, such as DJ effecters and soft-
ware by way of HID and/or MIDI.
The HID controls were implemented into the player for superior interfacing
with software, faster communication speed over MIDI, audio/visual streaming
and two-way information on the display. HID enables easy, precise and native
control of DVS systems such as Serato™ Scratch Live, Native Instruments’
Traktor series and MixVibes Cross2 without the need for time-coded discs.
Comment by Joe Ramirez, September 17th, 2009 @ 12:19 pm
The CDJ-2000 will be available in November 2009 with a suggested retail price of $2,150. The CDJ-900 will be available in December 2009 with a suggested retail price of $1,600.

is that what its come to… rolling up at your gig with a memory stick!!! for fuck sake, have djs lost the passion for spending time (and proper money) on finding and buying real physical music, i.e. vinyl. i love spending a few hours before a gig flicking through my collection, having a mix and putting my set together (actually having to think about what i can take and what i will play). 1210s will ALWAYS take pride sat on either side of the mixer in any club. and dont get me started on serato!
Comment by SMURKY, September 17th, 2009 @ 1:06 pm
forgot to say that NOTHING will ever sound as good as records, no matter how many bits or khz its sound card has.
Comment by Remedy, September 17th, 2009 @ 1:10 pm
Gotta say this is a big let down for me, hardly the step forward that it’s been hyped up as. When the cdj1000 came along it set new standards, but all pioneer have really done with the 2000 is add a usb port and midi. You can do everything this does and more with serato/tracktor using good old fashioned 1210’s, plus you’d save yourself a whole lot of money and have a lot more fun
IMO, of course.
Comment by MARCOSS, September 17th, 2009 @ 1:11 pm
Has somebody knows… It sais it will play MUSIC from DVDs. Will it play VIDEO TOO (like DVJ-1000?)
Comment by Wiredworx, September 17th, 2009 @ 1:18 pm
These do look amazing, although as stated above it seems to me to be a CDJ 1000 with multiple source inputs. That being said the CDJ 1000 is still the CD deck of choice after however many years, so you know what they say - if something ain’t broke…
Comment by Ed, September 17th, 2009 @ 1:32 pm
I agree with Marc, the Denon’s do the majority of what the specs suggest and are a lot cheaper.
For the price of a pair of CDJ-2000s you could afford any DVS system and very decent laptop. Pioneer trying to say that computers are unreliable in one of the videos is clutching at straws in my opinion.
Anyway more thoughts here- http://tinyurl.com/ngwas2
Comment by Mr.Root, September 17th, 2009 @ 2:14 pm
I like the new CDJ’s. A lot of new features that stopped me from normal CD’s and going into Ableton DJ’ing. I wonder how it integrates with Ableton anyway. I use a lot of loops and FX playing in the same time with the tracks but dragging around the laptop, soundcard, controller etc is allways a pain. The problem will be that if you will switch to the new CDJ 2000 technology, not every club you gonna play is going to have them. Yet. That’s why I prefer to be independent anyway. But I’m very excited to play with it on the any sooncoming presentation here and check ‘em out personally.
Comment by Marc Hannibal, September 17th, 2009 @ 2:17 pm
I understand that this is priced more for a club installation. But that doesn’t change the value argument I was trying to make. It’s not a point that I wouldn’t make enough to get them but why spend money to buy something when I have a perfectly good serato or traktor system, DJ’s have gotten used to packing their laptops and connection boxes in a bag, its not worth and extra $2000 to buy a new system to have the same system at home and take a USB to the club. Its not that big of a problem. Maybe pioneer was working on this product for a while and the prices of competitors fell and functions increased from when they started but it just doesn’t seem to make sense to me to get rid of what I’m using that does 95% of the same thing to spend more money. Like I said before I love the equipment but I think the CDJ-2000 is $1000 to high and the CDJ-900 is $600 to $700 to high. The problem Pioneer has now is what to do with the MK3 and CDJ-800 because now they are really overpriced for what you get. I assume when they sell out they are gone but I would rather wait until their prices drop buy Serato with a new SL3 and get a new 15inch macbook pro and still have $ left. Or buy Mixvibes Cross2, or Traktor Pro with their hardware. The more I think about it, the NS7 which has HID, a mixer, needle drop function and great software or the S3700 with controller abilities and real vinyl as well as USB will be hard to not buy compared to the CDJ-2000 and the CDJ-900 really is almost impossible to justify. It will be great and a industry standard when the price drops I’m sure.
Comment by Ed, September 17th, 2009 @ 2:28 pm
I’ve just added the non English language versions to my blog entry above:).
If these new players could actually beatmatch and/or have some type of beatgrid feature a la Traktor then clearly that would have been a massive step forward for DJs looking to get rid of their “unreliable laptops”;).
Comment by Ed, September 17th, 2009 @ 2:50 pm
It looks like it has the beatgrid feature is included- apologies for my precious post.

Comment by James, September 17th, 2009 @ 4:35 pm
Horrendously overpriced. Pioneer whilst the industry standard are well behind Denon when it comes to getting into the 21st century (DN5500 and 3700 run off Built in hard drive or up to 4 USB/LAN connected devices). I know because I had pioneer CDJ400s and used MP3s (via USB) and used the CDJs as MIDI controls with Traktor and Virtual DJ. Denon HS5500 is much more fun and I can DJ with only 1 unit (although after 2 beers the chance of cueing up or stopping the wrong deck is pretty high
emulating vinyl and CDs is the way forward but you can get 2 Denon 3700 or 5500 for same price as a CDJ2000.
Some fats cats at Pioneer will be putting down a nice deposit on a villa in Ibiza once the google generation starting buying these babies at 1700 Euros each.
P.S. surely someone in China can clone the technology and produce something at 20% of teh price??

SMURKY,
Do you still use the red phone box or have you joined the wireless revolution and got a mobile :>
Carpenters didnt stop being carpenters when they invented electricity and the electric saw so why are Vinyl junkie so scared of letting go?
Comment by PeterX, September 17th, 2009 @ 5:18 pm
@ Mark Hannibal
Why nagging about the price while you recommend to buy Apple Macbook pro’s as an alternative. This makes me laugh. Everybody knows these cost double the amount of a regular laptop. A price is more than the sum of it’s components. Try to switch a mac user to a regular laptop. No chance, even if you give the product for free.
Comment by SMURKY, September 17th, 2009 @ 5:38 pm
It’s true i still do use red phone boxes. scared of letting go? thats right, i wouldn’t want to sell my hundreds of vinyl (and the best turntables in the world) that i’ve spent PROPER time and PROPER money on (that, by the way, goes back to the music industry and artists that we all enjoy) and why the fuck would i want have all my music in mp3 format which doesn’t physically exist and could easily be lost if my computer fucked up.
For example, the few occasions that i’ve played out and there’s been some guy with a laptop with serato, they’ve had problems with it, who steps in to keep the tunes going, the guys with vinyl. And CDs, pieces of cheap plastic with no value…Lazy

PeterX,
You’re right Macs are expensive but most people find that the added software and how it works makes it worth the added cost. I can get the S3700’s for $750 and I doubt the CDJ-2000 is 3x better and I know the CDJ-900 isn’t $900 better (its basically the same feature list with a bigger screen without vinyl) same thing for the NS7 which was on sale at labor day weekend for 1299, again you are getting value compared to SSL. Let me say again, I love the new equipment just think the price is all wrong and to answer an earlier comment, the top clubs may get it for free or reduced prices and the biggest DJ’s will do the same but the other 10,000 of us just can’t throw away $2000.

When are you going to bring out a new CDJ-800 i want something affordable for my bedroom with a usb slot and a jog wheel i can make stiffer and slacker. i release there is the 400 for bedroom use but their jog wheels are too small.

SMURKY,
Got to admit that you’re right when it comes to software/hardware f**k ups. I had miles of problems with Torq/Xponent and actually changed from PC to Mac because of it. Almost (I say almost) glitch free. But rather than fear technology I just get angry and smash things and then turn on the 1210s or pioneer CDJs to play some tunes. ha ha
But the CDs have computers (albeit basic) as do some of the more advanced mixers, so its just a matter of finding something which isnt too high tech.
Lugging around vinyl limits you to 50 records in a box..
Comment by SMURKY, September 17th, 2009 @ 9:34 pm
Ha Ha, very true, i cant help myself when it comes to the vinyl vs digital thing, i absolutely love vinyl and couldn’t imagine anything else, and even though i break my back lugging about tunes, it’s all worth it to me. i’ve used cds on a couple of rare occasions and was just a bit bored with em!! glad to hear you got some 1210s, nothing beats them, everyone to their own.
Comment by Rapid Ric, September 17th, 2009 @ 9:53 pm

Sadly DJ Cruz- you know I don’t speak Spanish:)! Although the 900 has the majority of the features of the 2000, at around 1200 quid it’s far too dear compared to something like the DNS-3700.
Comment by Chris, September 17th, 2009 @ 10:30 pm
To SMURKY,
Totally cool that you are a vinyl junkie. FYI - I backup my entire digital music collection offsite for $4.95/month using Mozy.com. That will cover me if my computer “f*cks up” or if someone breaks into my house and steals everything.
Comment by Oldskool Pio Pro, September 17th, 2009 @ 10:44 pm
Well now you guys have to read the manual, hahahah
this is kind a funny, cause every Piofanboi always did blame Denon to have TOOOO much buttons!
Well check again, the 10 - 15 min learnin curve that printed in the manual are UP!
This is nothing more than a mating between a MEP 7000 and a DVJ 1000 with some side cream from NUMARKS NS 7 (Needledrop)
Whats there to rave about, really, are you so freakin blinded by the light that you buy anything pioneer dish out!
First of all the CDJ 900 must be the uglyest player that have seen the light of day!
CDJ 2000 might due, but not the latter, the mk3’s are slick and have curves like a woman, and they perform allmost as good as my 3700’s
The new machines lack some important stuff right out of the box
1.HDMI or Component, for hooking up the crate to a bigger screen
2. Touchscreen, you could shave of seconds in responsetime like on the DJM 909, Best mixer in the world!
3. Backbutton for the Beatcutter, and not just, pressing the button, there are no ways for inprovisation
4. More usb ports, it’s not enough with one
it’s good try, but not enough if you allready drive mk2, mk3’s or Denons
Sure the clubs gonna buy this, but the day, mhmmm sorry the ERA of true dj’s are over, cause nowone want to go the extra mile to make it perfect.
Why trouble with loops or hotstarts on the fly (gig) when you can set the on the plane on the way to the gig.
nah why mess with that shit, people just want to hear me spin some tunes, not beatmatch, loop, sample, scratch or whatever (LIVE)
Why make it hard on yourself, when you can reach money fame and pussy with a click of a button?
If that the case, why not even take it to another level
MIXTAPES!
Make em, spin em and sell em
prepared, prepackaged, prepayed!
CDJ 2000 got a be a great toombstone

Comment by Marc Hannibal, September 18th, 2009 @ 9:13 pm
It is my bad memory of did Pioneer lower the retail price from $2500 to $2150 since the CDJ-2000 was announced. I know I have seen it listed on preorder for $2100 but that was with the MSRP of $2500. Maybe now it will be $1700-$1800 range which is more realistic.
Comment by DdV, September 19th, 2009 @ 12:34 am
To throw in my 2 pence worth, I’m not going to be changing my rehearsal rig any time soon to include the 2000.
I have a cdj1000 and also have a denon 3700 and both are excellent units. In fact, the denon is my current fave.
Thing is, though, how many jocks will use more than 5% of the features of the 2000?
Comment by michele, September 20th, 2009 @ 1:25 am

Comment by Marc Hannibal, September 20th, 2009 @ 1:59 am
Ok last thing that I will say this week. lol. I will give Pioneer a little slack. I think that they have announced their product before some other news from other partners has been announced. If SSL 2 can use the CDJ-2000 without discs and with one USB cable with HID then that is a game changer, same for a new version of Traktor Pro. That would save $500 or more on the audio interface and provide something better than what is available. I believe Mixvibes Cross 2 will do the same. The pacemaker pro thing is much smaller but could be cool for some DJ’s. I expect some announcements coming soon that justify the higher costs, although I don’t know how much. I saw the CDJ-900 listed for $900, if the SSL 2 announcement is true then that moves it ahead of the S3700.

The 2000’s look good and im glad to be able to just take in USBs to play. I just hope they still retain some of the simple features of the 1000’s as they are so user friendly.

I wonder what the maximum size of Storage Devices (USB, SD, Hard Drive) is supported by this? And respective loading time for each… Anyone knows?

Have read everyone of these comments, and you will always get the odd one or two that are not satisfied.
Fantastic product, if you had given a pair of these to a Dj, 10 years ago he/she would have pooped their pants.
Look at it for what it is, AMAZING. !!!!

I’ll stick with my Denon Hs-5500. The things that i love about the CDJ-2000 is the WaveForm, Needle search, And the 4beat loop. I dont need the wave form and needle search that much but its a great feature. I think the 4BeatLoop will help me a lot though. Its kinda hard to set a perfect loop out on the 5500 after a couple of beers =). But for the price point, Id surely stick with my 5500. The 2 Decks in 1 function is so very useful for me! Means more sampling and no more SP-404. And come on, SPINNING PLATTER For The Win!! I LOVE DENONS!

I stick with my 3700 . i absoulotly love them!
and for the price of 1 cdj 2000 you get 2 3700
they have the better platter a 9″ spinning platter!!!
else the do usb2 and not usb1.1 which is much faster!
cdj2000 seems like a good player but for 1500 £ its just doent do enough to justyfi the price !!!
stuff like dvd reading useless when u have usb which is faster better and works allways.
plus you get 4 loop points at once on denon on cdj2000 only 1 and than you have to stop and load next 1!
the only downside on denon is the screen, a better screen and ssl integration would make it awsome!
