Profile: Deepgroove - Part 1

World-class party starters, rave lovers turned house heads Lee Pattison and Grayson Shipley are Deepgroove. They first met in the mid-90s, in Bristol, UK, and later set about creating their own party called Play. Inspired by the searing performance of guest spinners X-Press 2, Bristol’s own ballistic brothers went on to form the fun-fuelled, four-decks and EFX phenomenon that is Deepgroove (live) in 2002. With a dancefloor-rocking attitude, an arsenal of bottom heavy grooves and a unique, spontaneous way of delivering a live show, the guys have since caused electronic mayhem in clubs around the world.

Not only carving out a solid fan base over the years as DJs, the former Muzik magazine Bedroom Bedlam winners and Mixmag Future Heroes have also whipped up a storm on the production front. They have signed all kinds of twisted tracks to labels such as Benchmarc, Slave, Whoop! and UMM. And such a successful discography of re-edits, remixes and original productions has certainly helped the guys to advance their reputation as a formidable DJ/production duo. Darren Emerson’s Underwater imprint has also shown itself to be on the same wonky wavelength, releasing Deepgroove’s milestone Solo mix compilation in 2006 and their Altern8or single and Weekend Weapons cuts in 2007. Indeed, trusted as top track commentators for M8 magazine, their ability to make, shape and drop the most devastating dancefloor bombs is now widely recognised and it’s been an exceptionally hot year for the much in demand masters of the deep. After mashing up a cover mount CD called Festival Filth-Up for i-DJ magazine, using what is now their customary live set-up of four CDJs, a DJM-800 and EFX, June also saw Deepgroove declared as winners of the Best Breakthrough DJs title in DJ magazine’s Best of British awards. This summer, besides continuing their international club travels and hosting regular Play events at Thelka Social in Bristol, the guys will also be working on their debut studio album, so look out for many more groove-heavy workouts to come from Deepgroove.
