Interview: Gardner Post & Brian Kane at Optronica 2007

Here DJsounds presents an exclusive insight into the advanced minds of American conceptual/video artists Gardner Post and Brian Kane, both ex-members of the groundbreaking multimedia group Emergency Broadcast Network (EBN).

Gardner and Brian made their UK debut at London’s Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) during Optronica 2007 – where they performed together live for the first time in years. In these clips we now take a glimpse into that show, as the guys discuss their early inspirations, techniques, and transitions (from linear to non-linear methods of video manipulation). They also talk about Gardner’s latest sculpture/video instrument, the glamorous Baby Grand Master (BGM): a grand piano that has been masterfully modified to house DVJ decks!

EBN was founded by inspired Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) graduates Josh Pearson, Gardner and Brian – a team that was later restructured with the departure of Brian (who was also a creator of VuJak VJ software!) and the arrival of DJ Ron O’Donnell and video artist Greg Deocampo. Leading lights in the underground world of audiovisual sampling, scratching and remixing back in the early 90s, EBN’s potent ideas and rhythmic reuse of cable TV broadcasts, not to mention their contribution to U2’s Zoo TV Tour, have had an untold impact on today’s audiovisual/remix scene. Fortunately nowadays if you want to experience some of their influential video extravaganzas, then you can always take the broadband express direct to www.myspace.com/emergencybroadcastnetwork “a tribute to a band that should not be forgotten”.

Gardner and Brian are currently working on fresh material for a brand new show that will debut this summer at the Big Chill festival, held in Herefordshire, UK. Here they will be joined by hip-hop DJ Tom LaRoc from Miami and Exceeda from London, and you should hopefully be able to catch the BGM in full effect, too. So stay tuned for what promises to be an almighty mash-up!
