We love this clip from thesmokeeaters, AKA Paul Jay (The Gaffer) and Simon Melia (Best Boy). They use a DJM-700 to control an Edirol V8 and come up with these amazing video mixes. The guys both come from university backgrounds in film studies and hale from the UK, although now live in Amsterdam. In fact Paul can boast having organised the first ever Acid House party in The Netherlands at a huge warehouse weekender back in the day in 1987. Simon and Paul have strong independent DJ/producing backgrounds and you can check them out at www.simonmelia.blogspot.com and www.djpauljay.blogspot.com. thesmokeeaters, are The Gaffer (Paul Jay) & Best Boy (Simon Melia), who manipulate audio and video images using DVJ's, mixers and computers. Their unique fully audio visual experience mashes up samples from all areas of pop, rock and dance culture, seamlessly bringing together music videos, movies, television, graphics, advertising, computer games and self filmed material. Combined rhythmically with tightly synced fat pumping electronic dance beats, the past, present and future is visually re-mixed and re-interpreted. The audience connects on a different level where “what you hear is what you see”. So far this year they have toured Oz, headlined shows at Paradiso in Amsterdam and will play The Ritz in Hasselt, Belgium on April 30th. Summer is looking very busy with a heap of festival dates.
